Delft Cable District

This mural is a tribute to the past, an ode to the old cable factory, the former Dutch Cable Factory (NKF). The mural features an elderly factory worker gazing nostalgically at bygone times when the factory was bustling with activity. His presence symbolizes the hard work and dedication of the many people who devoted themselves to this place over the years.

Also highlighted is industrial designer Piet Zwart, a visionary in graphic and industrial design who was closely connected to the NKF, creating various graphic designs for the factory. The mural’s color palette is inspired by Zwart’s distinctive style, subtly referencing his influential work that often featured bold, contrasting colors and geometric shapes.

As Ricardo explains: “In the circular shapes, you can see several factory elements that refer to the machines used to produce the cables.” These circles symbolize the technology and machinery at the heart of cable production, adding depth to the mural by linking it to the industrial processes that defined the NKF’s legacy, as well as to Piet Zwart’s creative impact.

In this way, the mural brings a piece of industrial heritage back to the city, inviting passersby to reflect on the rich history of the old cable factory and the workers who were part of it.
