The German-Dutch architect Lotte Stam-Beese (1903-1988) began working as an urban planner for the city of Rotterdam in 1946. Until her retirement in1968, she remained the city’s only female architect. Stam-Beese was responsible for numerous designs during Rotterdam’s post-war reconstruction and urban expansion.
In Pendrecht, she introduced the concept of the “housing unit” in collaboration with architects from the association “Opbouw.” This unit included about 90 homes designed for various family types. It featured two strips of three- and four-story apartment buildings for small families, two rows of two-story houses for larger families, and a row for the elderly.
The mural reflects today’s diverse family structures and the multicultural character of the neighborhood. The two girls depicted in the mural are local residents. Special thanks to Kyara and Abby for being a model. This mural was also nominated for Best Mural in 2022, highlighting its impact and artistic significance.
